A large problem in America for adults prescribed ongoing medication for a chronic condition is medication adherence. A recent report released by the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) shows adults 40+ prescribed ongoing medication receive a combined grade of C+ for medication adherence. This is an alarmingly low grade due to the amount of risks and costs associated with medication non-adherence.
The top two highlights of the report include:
1. Patients’ personal connection with medical professionals and remaining informed were among top predictors of medication adherence.
2. “Simply forgetting” was most common response from non-adherent respondents.
Healthcare professionals can help improve medication adherence rates by implementing automated prescription refill reminders. By sending out automated prescription refill reminders through patients- preferred communication methods including email, SMS text and voice messaging, healthcare professionals can remind patients about their prescription and enable them to refill or speak to a pharmacist or health professional at the press of a button.
By utilizing automated prescription refill reminders, healthcare professionals can focus extra time counseling patients that are chronically ill and continuously forgetting to refill prescriptions, instead of manually reminding a patient who does not habitually forget to refill. It is important for healthcare professionals to educate their patients on the risks associated with medication non-adherence.
Through automated prescription refill reminders and patient education, medication adherence rates can increase, lowering risks to patients and curbing costs for the healthcare industry associated with unfilled prescriptions.
