K-12 school districts across the country are facing new burdens under the Every Student Succeeds Act’s (ESSA) parent engagement mandate.
In order to receive parent engagement funding, ESSA mandates that k-12 school districts conduct outreach to ‘all parents and family members’.
In their parent engagement policy, K-12 schools must describe how they will initiate:
- Regular & Meaningful Two-Way Communication
- Communication Using the Parent’s Preferred Language
Research shows consistent and effective parent-teacher communication can improve a student’s academic success.
For example, the “New Wave of Evidence” report from the Southwest Educational Development Laboratory found that students with engaged parents are more likely to:
- Earn Higher Grades and Test Scores
- Attend School Regularly
- Enroll in Higher-Level Programs
- Graduate and Go on to Postsecondary Education
Advocates of improving parent engagement say technology like school notification systems could help k-12 schools meet the law’s requirement.
School notification systems today come in many forms. Some of them, like Alert Solutions, offer multiple communication channels like voice, email, text messaging and social media pages to accommodate parent preference.
